Baller Alert’s Today in Hip-Hop: Public Enemy Released ‘Apocalypse 91…The Enemy Strikes Black’

On Oct. 1, 1991, legendary hip-hop group, Public Enemy, released their fourth album ‘Apocalypse 91… The Enemy Strikes Black’.

In true Public Enemy fashion, the album is filled with provocative lyrics that encourage a sociopolitical agenda. One thing fans could never deny is Public Enemy’s ability to remain true to the origins of hip-hop: being a voice for the people who are voiceless.

The critically acclaimed album received a No. 2 ranking in The Village Voice’s 1991 Pazz & Jop critics’ poll. The editors of Spin also ranked it No. 7 on their list of 20 Best Albums of the Year. The album was a commercial success peaking at No. 4 on the Billboard 200 charts.
