Baller Alert’s Today In Hip Hop: “The Wood” Starring Omar Epps, Richard T. Jones and Taye Diggs Was Released

On July 16, 1999, 19 years ago today, “The Wood” starring Omar Epps, Richard T. Jones and Taye Diggs was released. 

The film served as a coming of age film, as three longtime friends reflect on the old days, from their first meeting to their wildest moments, growing up in Inglewood, California in the 1980s. But, amid their recollection, Roland gets cold feet ahead of his big day. Eventually though, the three boys-turned-men make it to the wedding, and Mike (Omar Epps) flashes back to his final childhood memory of him and his boys from “The Wood.” 

“The Wood” was written and directed by Rick Famuyiwa, with the help of Todd Boyd, who also worked as a producer on the film. It was also a box office success. On a $6 million budget, distributed by Paramount Pictures, the film made her $25M with critics calling it, “a charming piece of work with believable characters.”

The soundtrack for the film was released just three days prior by Jive Records, and peaked at No. 16 on Billboard 200. By August 25th of the same year, the album was certified gold by RIAA.
