Dissatisfied with last week’s meeting with the governor of Illinois, Chance The Rapper is determined to repair the school system in his hometown of Chicago.
The Grammy Award-winning rapper held a press conference at Westcott Elementary School in Chicago on Monday, to discuss last week’s meeting with Governor Bruce Rauner.
“The governor gave me a lot of vague answers in our meeting,” he said during the live stream. “Our talks were unsuccessful. Governor Rauner still won’t commit to giving Chicago’s kids a chance without caveats or ultimatums.”
“Our kids should not be held hostage because of political positions,” Chance continued. “If the governor does not act, Chicago Public Schools will be forced to end school 13 days early. That means over 380,000 kids will not have adult supervised activities in June and could possibly be put in harm’s way.”
During his press conference, Chance said that though he was frustrated with the governor’s inaction, he will still do all that he can for the children of his hometown. He then announced that he would be giving $1 Million to Chicago Public Schools.
“Today, I’m proud to announce that I am donating $1 million to CPS to support arts and enrichment programs. I’m excited to share that this donation was made possible by my fans. Through ticket sales from my upcoming tour and an unprecedented coordination from Live Nation, AEG, Ticketmaster, and independent promoters, we were able to band together to use funds from ticket sales to donate to CPS. I’m honored to make this contribution and help to cultivate Chicago’s creative minds.”
