If you are an IKEA shopper, then you are familiar with the brand’s $0.90 “Frakta” bag. The shopping bag has inspired high-end designers like Balenciaga, who recently released their $2,145 tote. Well, now that totes are more fashionable, it looks like IKEA is aiming to head in a different direction. To bring creativity to the brand, they have decided to collaborate with Off-White’s creative designer and the founder, Virgil Abloh.
Abloh has already made some huge changes to the shopping tote. The designer not only changed the color from blue to yellow but also added a theme name titled “Sculpture.” The words are presented on the front of the bag in a black, bold print. According to IKEA’s head of design, Marcus Engman, the retailer decided to collaborate with Abloh because they are highly intrigued by the designer’s architectural vision, street aesthetic, and music background.
Words from Virgil Abloh:
“We’re in a moment where IKEA is transcending, and people are bringing this ‘do it yourself’ culture to the blue bag. What I’m most interested in is doing that process in partnership with the brand. It’s allowing me to put my opinion on a classic. It’s unique, and distinctly as much of off-white as it’s IKEA.”
Not only will Virgil redesign the Frakta bag, but there is word that he will be designing furniture for the home store as well.
The official release date for the bags have not been released, but I am sure it will be some time this year. Are you here for the collaboration?
