“Black-ish” Renewed For Sixth Season And Another Spinoff “Mixed-ish” Ordered By ABC

ABC’s hit series “Black-ish” has been renewed for a sixth season, and in addition, the network has announced a spinoff. The show will focus on Traci Ellis Ross’ character Rainbow and life in the ’80s as a child in a mixed race family.

According to Deadline, the spinoff entitled “Mixed-ish” is based off an episode of “Black-ish” that ABC intends to air on May 7th. That episode, “Becoming Bow,” could have become a backdoor pilot for a potential prequel spinoff series, but it looks like the network has already decided to move ahead with the series idea as ABC pulled the episode to save it for next season.

“Mixed-ish,” written by Peter Saji and Kenya Barris will be centered around Rainbow Johnson (Ross) as she recounts her experience growing up in a mixed-race family in the ‘80s and the constant dilemmas they had to face over whether to assimilate or stay true to themselves.

Young Bow will be played by actress Arica Himmel, Tika Sumpter will play Alicia Johson, and Christina Anthony will play Denise. The show will be executive produced by Saji, Barris and Ross, Cinema Gypsy (Laurence Fishburne and Helen Sugarland) along with Anthony Anderson.
