Mexican boxer Alejandro Gonzalez Jr, who fought Carl Frampton for the IBF word super bantamweight title in July 2015, was found murdered in Guadalajara. He was 23.
Gonzalez went by the nickname “La Cobrita.” His body was discovered in a car near his home. He was found executed alongside two other bodies, one belonging to his grandfather. Investigators believe it was a cartel hit. One line of investigation points to a person nicknamed “El Cholo” who belongs to a local cartel. Investigations also suggest the three men were killed in Tlaquepaque and later transported via the vehicle to Guadalajara, where they were left. The three deceased appear to have been members of a rival group.
“Everyone at Premier Boxing Champions is profoundly saddened by the death of Alejandro Gonzalez Jr. He was a fantastic boxer with a bright future,” said Tim Smith, vice president of communications for PBC. “It is a tragic loss for the boxing community. We offer our deepest condolences to his family and pray for them as they cope with the loss of their beloved ‘Cobrita.'”
