Coney Island Undergoes Water Park Expansion, Permanently Shutting Down Amusement Park This Month

Ohio natives who have fond memories of the historic Coney Island Amusement Park have only a few more weeks to enjoy the rides before the park shuts them down forever.

According toĀ Cincinnati.com,Ā the 24 amusement park rides on-site will run until September 21 before being shut down to make room for expansion and renovations to the water park side of Coney Island, the Sunlite Water Adventure area. The final day will be followed by the annual Fire Up The Night event.Ā

The shut down of rides is reportedly due to the lack of attention each excursion received after resources and man-hours were divided for the rides and the water park equally. Moving forward, Coney Island will focus its efforts on the new water park features and amenities at the water park.

Rob Schutter Jr., Coney Island’s president and CEO said, “All of our consumer research, all of our consumer feedback, and all of our in-park data shows that the vast majority of our guests come to Coney Island because of the fun they have while in the Sunlite Pool area.ā€

According to the publication, renovations on the park have already begun and the final unveiling will mark the park’s 100th birthday in 2025.Ā ā€œSince 2016, weā€™ve invested more than $6 million into the Sunlite Pool,” Schutter added. “We will kick start a new multi-phase renovation to grow Coney Island into the regionā€™s premier swim and play destination.”
