Detroit Police Officer Suspended After Video Shows Him Punching Naked Woman

A Detroit police officer has been suspended with pay after footage of his “disturbing” attack on a naked woman in a hospital went viral.

According to CNN, the incident occurred on Wednesday night, after officials received a call for a “lewd and lascivious in progress near Brainard and Trumbull in the third precinct.

According to officials, the woman had been walking around the neighborhood naked before police picked her up and transported her to Detroit Receiving Hospital.

“We know from our training and experience anytime we transport someone, particularly if they are suffering from mental illness for their safety and for the officers’ safety and the community’s safety that we handcuff,” Detroit Police Chief James Craig said of the incident, referencing his initial concern over the fact that the officers left the woman uncuffed.

Although the woman had not been agitated upon the officers’ arrival, things took a turn for the worse once she arrived at the hospital.

In fact, officers say the woman took off the robe she was given by the officers and went on to spit on hospital employees. She also bit a security officer twice and tried to bite another officer, who in turn, attacked the woman with fists to the face.

“At that point, we have grave concerns for the officer’s actions,” the chief said of the incident, as he explained that the woman turned her back to the officer, as he continued to swing at her at least 10 times.

Although the name of the officer has not been released, he’s been described as an 18-year veteran who has had six minor use of force incidents, prior to Wednesday’s attack.
