The estranged husband of Jeanine Cammarata and his new girlfriend have been charged with murder.
Police positively identified the burnt remains of a body found at a storage facility in Staten Island using dental records of the missing teacher.
The victim’s husband Michael Cammarata, 42, and his current girlfriend Ayisha Egea, 41, who is six months pregnant with his child have been charged with second-degree murder, tampering with evidence, and concealing a human corpse, in the death of Jeanine Cammarata.
Michael and Jeanine were in the midst of a contentious divorce and custody battle. Police say that sometime between Saturday and Monday of last week, Michael and his new girlfriend killed Jeanine at their home In Rockaway Beach, Queens.
The pair burned her body and stuffed her remains into trash bags and then hauled her back to Staten Island where they left her remains in a storage locker at a facility.
The locker was found lined with air fresheners in a shabby attempt to mask the smell of the burned beyond recognition corpse that was placed inside.
Jeanine, who taught at PS 29 in Staten Island was last seen on Saturday when she told her family she was going to pick up her two children from their father, Michael.
When the family hadn’t heard from her by Monday, and she didn’t show up to work, her current boyfriend reported her missing and her loved ones suspected foul play.
The Cammaratas had been separated since May of 2016 and police say there was a history of domestic violence incidents between the former couple, including charges of stalking, harassing and assault after the separation.
Jeanine’s friends and family said she lived in fear of her ex, but was always concerned with trying to co-parent with him amicably for the sake of their children, a son age 3 and a daughter who is 7.
A few days before she disappeared, she had Michael served with divorce papers and the two had a family court hearing coming up that Monday following her disappearance.
