Kim Kardashian Accused Of Cultural Appropriation AGAIN After Wearing Indian Culture Headpiece In “Sunday Service” Photo

Kim Kardashian and her family are known for “borrowing” styles from various cultures and profiting off of them in some way, and the habit has once again brought backlash to Kim after she posted a photo to her Instagram in a traditional Indian hair accessory with the caption, “Sunday Service Vibe.” Social media wasn’t quite feeling the look though.

One IG user said in Kim’s comments, “Keep to your own and stop stealing others cultures and their ideas and making them your own” Another user wrote, “So no one’s gonna call out Kim Kardashian on cultural appropriation for wearing Indian jewelry but when it comes to a non-black person wearing dreadlocks, the Internet goes up in flames.”

The headpiece that Kim was wearing in the photo is a Maang Tikka, head jewelry traditionally worn by Indian brides but can also be worn by women for any special occasion. People questioned Kim’s knowledge of what she was wearing, commenting, “Ummm where’s the Indian inspiration credit, do you even know what your wearing on your forehead is called???”

Many within the Indian community (and others) have found the “stylizing” of ethnicity and cultural elements as problematic, and it is not the first time Kardashian has found herself at the center of critical attention regarding appropriation. Remember the “Bo Derek Braids?”

How do you feel about cultural symbols being misrepresented in fashion?
