Miley Cyrus Is Done With Hip Hop “I Can’t Listen To That Anymore”

Miley Cyrus, who once dated producer Mike Will Made It, wore a rubber penis and nipple pasties during a concert, sang Khia’s “My Neck My Back” on stage and dropped an entire hip-hop inspired “Bangerz” album, now says rap is misogynistic and gross.

After “Party In The U.S.A,” where a young Miley Cyrus references playing Jay-Z, then admittedly, later on, reveals that she has never actually heard a Jay-Z song before, Miley hooked up with Mike Will and found herself collaborating with the likes of Juicy J, French Montana, Pharrell Williams and Wiz Khalifa. She was name-dropped in rap songs from Migos to Jay-Z himself. She was credited for making twerking “mainstream.”  A few years and a beef with Nicki Minaj later, Miley says she’s putting some distance between herself and hip hop.

“But I also love that new Kendrick song: ‘Show me somethin’ natural like ass with some stretch marks,’” she explained in an interview. “I love that because it’s not ‘Come sit on my dick, suck on my cock.’ I can’t listen to that anymore. That’s what pushed me out of the hip-hop scene a little. It was too much ‘Lamborghini, got my Rolex, got a girl on my cock’—I am so not that.”

Miley then says she didn’t understand critics who said she was appropriating hip hop culture.

“It’s mind-boggling to me that there was even a controversy around me having black dancers. That became a thing, where people said I was taking advantage of Black culture, and with Mike [WiLL Made-It]—what the fuck? That wasn’t true. Those were the dancers I liked!” Miley said.

Miley says her new album will be political/rootsy,  a completely different sound from “Bangerz.”

I hope that Miley understands that people did not think she was appropriating hip hop culture based on the dancers she chose for her performances and videos. It was because she was credited with inventing twerking, yet never corrected mainstream America when they said it. It was because she could easily go from never hearing a Jay-Z song in her life to doing songs with the biggest hip hop acts, to now saying the music is vile and misogynistic and “she’s not that.” If it’s that easily disposable, it was never you. If it was never you, you were appropriating it for the time being.
