OMG…what is the world coming to…
“A couple face ten years in prison after selling their newborn baby on the Internet.
The couple – a man aged 26 and woman aged 24 who already had another child – are currently under investigation by police and social services in the Belgium town of Ghent.
They decided they could not afford the new baby and so offered him to the highest bidder.
He is thought to have gone to a couple from Holland for a ‘decent five figure sum’, with the money paid in security internet transfers, said a Belgium state prosecutor.
The baby was born in a hospital in July and was immediately sent to live with the purchasers.
The mother of the baby entered herself into the maternity ward under the Dutch family’s name. A Belgium state prosecutor said: ‘The couple are suspected of registering the birth under a false name, which is an offence.
‘That is to say that the name the baby boy was given was not that of his real mother.
‘The offence carries a maximum sentence of ten years in prison.’
He said that the baby has been properly cared for, and will stay with his Dutch family for the time being.
The Belgium couple are from the Flemish region of the country, which has an unenviable reputation for peculiar social behaviour.
In 2005 a Flemish woman acting as a surrogate changed her mind about relinquishing the baby she was carrying and ended up selling it to a Dutch couple.
The mother told the pair expecting the baby that she had a miscarriage and then sold the baby on the internet for £12,000 to a childless couple from the Netherlands, who were willing to adopt the baby and went through the normal adoption procedures.
The controversy set off months of legal battles between the couple initiating the surrogacy, the biological mother, the adopting Dutch couple and the Belgium parliament.
To make the story even stranger, the couple asking for the surrogate had no legal relation with the surrogate mother as they also met through the internet.
And the woman had only promised to carry it for them after the couple had sent a sample of the man’s sperm to be used.
The baby was registered initially with the biological mother and a Belgium court had ruled it be returned to her.
However, the Dutch couple refused to do so saying all proper procedure had been followed and that the matter must be settled in a Dutch court.
Finally in April 2006, when the child was already thirteen months old a Dutch court ruled that the baby would stay with the Dutch couple, under whose care the baby had been since it was born.
The court cited that a bond had already been formed and it was in the best interest of the child to remain with the Dutch family.
The current case is unlikely to be as simple, with disgusted commentators already warning that it sets a dangerous precedent.
Police have warned that a trade in young babies could begin on web sites like eBay.” dailymail.co.uk
I have no words for this, I am speechless.
