After years of research, one man has proven that the party drug #ecstasy is good for your mental health.
#RickDoblin, 64, endured the Cuban Missile Crisis and the Vietnam War growing up, and after those experiences, he believed humanity was “crazy” and “inherently destructive.” As a teen, like most, Doblin began experimenting with psychedelics including LSD and magic mushrooms, as they possess side effects that stretch the mind. What was once curiosity became a genuine interest in psychedelics possibly being the answer to mankind’s underlying issues.
It took Doblin 32 years, but after several failures and setbacks, he has proven MDMA (ecstasy) to be medically legitimate. Today, The Food and Drug Administration is considering the drug to be a potential “breakthrough” for post-traumatic stress disorder and cleared late-stage studies of up to 300 patients, according to AP News. Doblin‘s nonprofit organization, Multidisciplinary Association for Psychedelic Studies (MAPS) will be conducting studies. The group’s mission is to promote mind-altering drugs for mental health. Researchers will start testing patients sometime in November.
Doblin’s goal is to have psychedelics FDA-approved by 2021. If approved, it would take the first psychedelic drug — currently in the same ultra-restrictive category as heroin and cocaine — to make the transition to prescription medicine. By 2035, Doblin wants all psychedelics to be legal for recreational use. “Psychedelics have been used for thousands of years for healing and spiritual purposes,” says Doblin. “I thought my contribution would be to bring them back.”
