Serena Williams’ “Superhero” Catsuit Will Not Be Allowed At The French Open, Nike Responds

Blogged By carmenroxanna

“You can take the superhero out of her costume, but you can never take away her superpowers. #justdoit,” is what Nike tweeted Saturday morning after it was announced that Serena Williams’ black #Nike catsuit will not be acceptable attire to compete at the French Open. Serena unveiled the new look at #RolandGarros in May.

Earlier this week, French Tennis Federation president Bernard Giudicelli stated, “I believe we have sometimes gone too far. Serena’s outfit this year, for example, would no longer be accepted. You have to respect the game and the place.”

According to #Mashable, the 23-time #GrandSlam champion compared her outfit at Roland Garros to something out of Marvel’s #BlackPanther and said the new look made her “feel like a super hero.” She also expressed that she felt like it was “an opportunity to inspire a whole different group of amazing women and kids.”

Serena’s reason for wearing the form fitting suit is not just to be fashionable but for another very valid reason. The catsuit is worn to protect against blood clots, as Williams struggled with the swelling of clotted blood after giving birth to her daughter, #Olympia last year.

There has been a lot of disapproval on the decision to impose a dress code for the #FrenchOpen and many people have speculated that the reason for the change is more about the person wearing it and not about “respect of the game”. What do you guys think?
