Simone Biles seemed to have easily conquered gold in gymnastics. But, one thing she didn’t know how to overcome was dealing with sexual abuse.
The award-winning medalist divulged to Priyanka Chopra about her dark, abusive past. She was one of many brave young women who spoke out against former USA Gymnastics doctor, Larry Nassar.
On Chopra’s YouTube channel “If I Could Tell You Just One Thing,” Simone admitted how the effects of the unsolicited encounter still haunt her to this day. So much so, she still sees a therapist in order to figure out how to cope.
Though she chose to be in denial about the incidents out of fear of being known as “Simone the sexual abuse survivor,” inside she knew something was deeply wrong-Especially after confiding in her mother. The 22-year-old explained to Chopra that a mechanism she used to get through her depression was sleep. “I told one of my lawyers, I said, ‘I sleep all the time because it’s the closest thing to death,’” she explained.
Eventually, Biles said she saw a light at the end of the tunnel when she recognized something had to be done. That’s when she decided to speak to detectives about the mistreatment.
“It wasn’t easy, but I feel like I’m a stronger woman today and I feel like telling my story has helped younger girls.”
