As we all know, today is a very special day for lovers. It’s Valentine’s day! For some, it’s a day traditionally reserved to acknowledge the special someone in your life with a gift or treat that lets them know how much you care. Flowers, Cards, Romantic Candle-lit dinners… making memories that will make your heart melt.
For the rest of us, it’s– February 14th, a Sunday (this year) and a great day to relax, maybe log off from all the super sappy social media posts (that we know we’re going to see), curl up in front of the TV and watch some great movies.
So if you don’t have a boo, don’t worry- We’re here to help with a list of the best Anti-Valentine’s Day movies to help you take your mind off not being in a lovey-dovey ass mood.
We came up with a list of movies that can make you laugh, cry or scare your heart right out of your chest.
All with one common theme though—that love is never what it’s cracked up to be.
Up first- “The War Of The Roses” (1989) Michael Douglas and Kathleen Turner star as the ideal married couple who slowly fall horribly apart. If you’ve ever wondered how two people, who at first seemed so perfect for one another, slowly end up hating the sight of each other, this movie is a good example of how it happens.
“The Break Up” (2006) In this movie, Jennifer Aniston and Vince Vaughn also start off so in love- they’re the typical couple, but once they move into their dream condo together- their relationship starts to get really real. They go from “lovebirds” to “roommates” and awkwardness ensues when neither one of them wants to be the first to say goodbye… to their investment in their shared property.
“Blue Valentine” (2010) Ryan Gosling and Michelle Williams are two young lovers who fall in love before they even know who they are. Like so many people who marry young, they discover after building a life together and starting a family that sometimes “love” just isn’t enough.
“Waiting to Exhale” (1995) This movie is a classic, based on the best-selling novel by Terry McMillan. I recommend getting together with your best girlfriends and grabbing plenty of wine and Kleenex for this one. The all-star cast of Whitney Houston, Angela Bassett, Lela Rochon, and Loretta Devine playing four girlfriends trying to navigate their relationships with men from different starting points will remind you how important it is to put your love of self first.
“He’s Just Not That Into You” (2009) Another great movie you can watch with your girls as it explores all the pitfalls of dating and misreading signals from the opposite sex. Another film based on another best-selling book that definitely drops a gem or two.
“What’s Love Got to Do with it?” (1993) Laurence Fishburne and Angela Bassett play the iconic rock duo of Ike and Tina Turner in this film based on Tina’s autobiography. Their rocky marriage and rise to fame despite drug abuse, cheating, and domestic violence shows you that no matter how perfect a couple may appear, you never know what really goes on inside a marriage.
“Cruel Intentions” (1999) This movie is another book adaption, set in the late ’90s with a bunch of obnoxiously rich prep school kids. Ryan Phillippe, Sarah Michelle Gellar, and Reese Witherspoon star as narcissistic teenagers who use sex and manipulation as weapons against their classmates. Nothing like watching a young man tricking a girl into thinking he’s in love with her and then breaking her heart for sport to make you thankful you’re still single.
“The Shining” (1980) You may think this is a far-out choice but, to be honest, it’s a personal favorite. Jack Nicholson and Shelly Duvall star as a married couple who take a job as caretakers to a hotel for the winter. Based on Stephen King’s novel, just imagine being locked away with your significant other for months, isolated from the world, and slowly coming to the realization that he or she is losing their mind-consumed with intent to kill you. Yup, sounds like marriage to me!
“Gone Girl” (2014) Another movie that proves you never really know the person you love is Gone Girl, this movie which is also based on a best-selling book, stars Ben Affleck, Rosamund Pike, and Tyler Perry, in the story of a seemingly loving couple who have more going on under the surface. They seem perfect on the outside, but they are far from it. It’s also a cautionary tale that teaches you to never put anything past your significant other.
“Fatal Attraction” (1987) Michael Douglas and Glenn Close star in this cautionary tale of what happens when a husband tries to have a tiny little affair while his wife is out of town. When this movie came out years ago, it made a lot of men nervous, but when you watch it today- you realize maybe Glenn Close’s character wasn’t that bad.
“Thin Line Between Love and Hate” (1996) Martin Lawrence, Lynn Whitfield, and Bobby Brown star in this film, which is very much like “Fatal Attraction.” Martin’s character Darnell is a ladies’ man who doesn’t realize when he’s bucked up on the wrong woman. She told him not to play with her.
“It Follows” (2014) This movie is a seriously scary horror flick about a sexually transmitted disease that kills you, and the only way to save yourself is to pass it on. It will make you grateful that you are not out here sleeping with the wrong people.
“Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind” (2004) Ever been so in love in a relationship that the break up was so painful you wish you could just erase the person from your mind? Well, that’s the plot of this movie starring Jim Carrey and Kate Winslet. It’s definitely a movie that shows how emotionally and mentally difficult it can be to break a soul tie.
“The Wedding Singer” (1998)This is my hands down favorite Adam Sandler movie, and it’s also a great movie for anyone who’s down on love. Sandler plays a hopeless romantic who’s dreamed of getting married since he was a little boy. He’s so in love with the idea of love he doesn’t realize what a blessing it is when his fiancée ditches him at the altar. It’s a great way to remind yourself that love finds you when it’s time.
