Tom Coughlin Steps Down as Giants Head Coach – blogged by @LoveRubyWoo

Amidst the ongoing speculation about his future, Tom Coughlin has decided to step down as the head coach of the New York Giants. Coughlin began his stint as head coach of the Giants in 2004, the same year that the team drafted franchise quarterback Eli Manning. Together, the duo has led the Giants to a Super Bowl victory twice in 12 seasons. However, since winning the Super Bowl in 2012, the Giants have been unable to make the playoffs again. The continuous disappointment experienced by the Giants over the past four seasons has led many to realize, include Coughlin himself, that it might be time for a change.

Coughlin released a statement this afternoon announcing his resignation:

“I met with John Mara and Steve Tisch this afternoon, and I informed them that it is in the best interest of the organization that I step down as head coach. I strongly believe the time is right for me and my family, and as I said, the Giants organization.

“It has been an honor and a privilege to serve as head coach of the New York Football Giants. This is a not a sad occasion for me. I have spent 15 years with this organization as an assistant and head coach and was fortunate to be part of three Super Bowl winning teams. A Lombardi Trophy every five years is an achievement in which we all take great pride.

“Obviously, the past three years have not been what any of us expect, and as head coach, I accept the responsibility for those seasons.

“I think it has been evident these last 12 years here how much pride I take in representing this franchise. I am gratified and proud that we were able to deliver two more Lombardi trophies to the display case in our lobby during that time. That is a tribute to our players and staff, and it was truly fulfilling to be the leader of those teams.”

Quarterback Eli Manning seemed to be especially affected by the news, as it was reported that he was emotional in the locker room. “He’s been a great coach to play under,” Manning said of his long-time coach. “We have a great relationship, great trust. I appreciate the way he works, I think he appreciates the way I handle my business and play quarterback and prepare and get ready. We’ve had a good run, could’ve been better, obviously, but I appreciate everything he’s done for me.”

Coughlin has not specifically stated whether or not he plans on retiring from coaching for good or if he will continue to seek a position with a different organization in the future.
