Donald Trump was very proud of his supporter and San Francisco 49ers top draft pick, Nick Bosa, sending some words of encouragement. Bosa is the 2nd NFL draft pick, behind Kyler Murray, who is the NFL’s #1 draft pick and whose accolades far exceed those of Bosa.
”Congratulations to Nick Bosa on being picked number two in the NFL Draft. You will be a great player for years to come, maybe one of the best. Big Talent! San Francisco will embrace you but most importantly, always stay true to yourself. MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN!,” Trump tweeted.
Trump’s “stay true to yourself” remark comes a week after Bosa was highly criticized for releasing a number of racially charged tweets, which have since been deleted. Bosa described ‘Black Panther’ as the “worst Marvel movie”; described Beyonce’s music as “trash,” and called former 49ers player Colin Kaepernick a “clown.” He was also criticized for “liking” many Instagram posts with racist and homophobic slurs. He later apologized for the tweets.
Kyler Murray, on the other hand, was drafted by the Arizona Cardinals and reportedly offered a $35 million contract, in addition to also being an accomplished baseball player, placing ninth in the 2018 MLB draft. Murray is the only player ever drafted in the first round of two major sports.
Twitter immediately recognized the blatant bias and have been calling Trump out ever since. One Twitter user wrote, “You do realize that another player went #1 overall in the draft, right ahead of Bosa, right?”
Another user tweeted, “FYI: The first pick in the NFL draft, Kyler Murray, is the only player drafted in the first round of two major sports (MLB). I think that deserves a congratulatory message, but we all know why he won’t get it from you!”
One user is adamant that the tweet comes from a racist perspective, tweeting, “Congratulating the first white draft pick, and nothing to say about the first pick overall. #thisiswhywesayyoureracist #KylerMurray.”
