Two Top Executives Resign From State Attorney Kim Foxx’s Office Amidst The Jussie Smollett Drama

Two of Cook County State Attorney Kim Foxx’s top execs have resigned in the wake of the Jussie Smollett controversy. According to The Post, April Perry and Mark Rotert have both turned in resignation letters amidst backlash over the way Foxx handled Smollett’s case.

Perry was the ethics officer and worked with Foxx since January 2017. She is the staffer who announced Foxx was recusing herself from Smollett’s case in an email to other state’s attorneys in the department. Mark Rotert, Perry’s assistant, reportedly turned in his resignation in March, the day after all 16 felony charges against Smollett were dropped.

Foxx continued to have dealings in the case, although she’d been “recused,” later stating her recusal was “informal,” and she did not mean it in a “legal sense” but instead a “colloquial sense.”

However, in the wake of the resignation, Foxx said of Perry, “She has been a valuable resource to the office in ensuring that we operate with the highest levels of integrity and professionalism.”

The resignations of both Rotert and Perry will be effective May 3rd.
