Paul McCartney recently sat down with GQ magazine where he shared some memorable moments throughout his career. McCartney spoke from the heart about his adolescence and even revealed stories about The Beatles that were otherwise unknown.
Probably the most outrageous story McCartney recounted was the time he and John Lennon masturbated together as boys. That’s right— Paul says he and three of Lennon’s friends had a group masturbation session at Lennon’s house. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
“Instead of getting roaring drunk and partying— …we were just all in these chairs, and the lights were out, and somebody started masturbating, so we all did,” he said.
To make things even more interesting, Paul said the boys shouted random celebrity names at one another, in what he calls “good harmless fun.”
“We were just like, Bridget Bardot! Whoo! And then everyone would thrash a bit more. I think it was John sort of said, Winston Churchill!”
McCartney and Lennon were very close friends for over twenty years until Lennon’s untimely death in 1980.
Other tea Paul revealed during his interview was that Lennon also tried to get him to try trepanning, or the drilling into one’s brain through a hole in the skull. He said he told Lennon to do it himself first.
“John was a kooky cat. We’d all read about it you know— this is the 60s. The ‘ancient art of trepanning,’ which lent a little bit of validity to it, because ancient must be good. And all you’d have to do is just bore a little hole in your skull, and it lets the pressure off— well that sounds very sensible. But look, John, you try it and let me know how it goes,” he said.
McCartney also casually mentioned that he basically discovered DNA. Well, not exactly but he did say that the idea of double helix came to him during an acid trip in London in the 60s, before DNA discovery.
“I remember at the height of it seeing this thing that was like a spiral going up in, in my brain, and it was beautiful colors, like multicolored gems going up this spiral. And then, shortly thereafter, [scientists] discovered the DNA helix. I certainly have a feeling, not only my own birth, I’ve seen my own DNA,” he said.
Who knew Paul McCartney was a scientist?! Seems like he’s taking a page out of Quincy Jones’ book with such a telling interview.
