The Weeknd and Daft Punk Sued For Stealing “Starboy”

The Weeknd has been slapped with a lawsuit over claims of stealing his super smash, Daft Punk-produced hit, “Starboy.”

In new documents obtained by TMZ, Yasminah, a self-proclaimed poet, singer, and songwriter, filed a suit against the Canadian-bred singer and the “Starboy” production crew for copying her song, “Hooyo.”

According to the multi-talented artist, she says she co-wrote “Hooyo,” in 2009 and released it the same year. But, The Weeknd’s hit wasn’t dropped until late 2016.

In the suit, Yasminah claims the singer jacked her hook, the key, tempo, and even the rhythm, as she claims both songs feature “prominent claps on beats two and four.” And to make matters worse, Yasminah says she has the support of the general public, as several “blog posts have been written describing the similarities between the songs…and there are thousands of comments on those posts” agreeing with her, so she wants her cut.

According to TMZ, Yasminah says two of her producers already threatened lawsuits over the songs, which, in turn, translated into settlements. But, she says she never received her share.

As a result, she’s suing The Weeknd, as well as Daft Punk, for at least $5 million.
