Chicago’s GHerbo was featured on the Complex series “Open Late” with Peter Rosenberg and talked about his fellow Chi-town rap star, Kanye West.
#Swervo seems to have had a change of heart when it comes to Kanye’s controversial slavery comments. Initially, his since-deleted response was, “He a b*tch, traitor Judas a**,” but now he says he has been around West and is trying to understand his thought process.
Herbo said, “I wasn’t pleased because I didn’t understand the direction he was going in. I’m not saying I understand what he’s doing now, but just being around Kanye – I’ve been around him more than once – but being around him in settings like this, where you can really talk to him, I kind of feel like he got good intentions. Not saying he’s doing it the right way, but he got good intentions.”
He continued on to say, “[Kanye] told me, and it made perfect sense, ‘I wasn’t saying slavery was a choice like we choose to be in slavery. But slavery was a choice to me, to Nat Turner, to Harriet Tubman.’ That’s what he said. To Nat Turner, slavery was a choice. To Harriet Tubman, slavery was a choice. Because I have the choice to run, I have the choice to fight. That’s what he was saying, but he didn’t express it that way.”
