A documentary telling the life and death of Sandra Bland is on HBO.
Bland, 28, was arrested after a minor traffic violation on July 10, 2015, in Waller County, Texas. After she was booked, she was put in a holding cell. Three days later she was found dead hanging from a noose in her cell. Her death was ruled as a suicide and was followed with protests demanding more information be released about what happened during her time in jail. Many speculate that Bland was murdered, and endured racial violence while jailed.
Today, her story will be told in a new documentary titled “Say Her Name: The Life and Death of Sandra Bland.” The project will analyze Bland’s death and will include never-before-seen evidence that aligns with a racially motivated murder being disguised as a suicide. The film will also include 30 of Bland’s vlogs “Sandy Speaks,” in which she discusses several topics like police brutality, life issues, and natural hair.
“Via these videos, Sandy herself emerges as a central voice in ‘Say Her Name’ — an empowered, enlightened woman of color whose sharp, humorous, charismatic remarks address subjects from educating kids about black history to police brutality to the importance of natural hair,” according to HBO’s website description.
The documentary is directed by Kate Davis and David Heilbroner, and is one hour and 43 minutes long. The film is now on demand.
