Donald Trump’s former personal attorney, Michael Cohen, has arranged to testify in a public hearing before the House Oversight Committee on February 7, representatives reported Thursday.
Cohen’s testimony will happen one month before the start of his three-year prison term, which he acquired for lying to Congress, tax crimes, and campaign finance violations, which he said were from his responsibility to hide Donald Trump’s “foul acts.”
In a statement of claim, Cohen said he agrees to testify in “furtherance of my commitment to cooperate and provide the American people with answers.” He continued: “I look forward to having the privilege of being afforded a platform with which to give a full and credible account of the events which have transpired.”
In spite of being Trump’s personal lawyer for more than a decade, Cohen has plenty of scandalous information on the president. Most recent are the facts regarding the silent payments to two women who allegedly had sexual relationships with Trump and reports on the Trump campaign’s dealings with Russia.
It’s uncertain what Cohen will be permitted to talk about in the hearing and what Robert Mueller, or prosecutors in New York, will want him to preserve to himself.
In an announcement, Chairman Elijah Cummings, who requested Cohen to testify, stated his committee will dodge “inappropriately interfering with any ongoing criminal investigations.” He stated he’s speaking with Mueller’s office to hinder that.
In the meantime, his testimony will certainly cause a presidential temper tantrum from his former mentor, who has referred Cohen as a “weak person,” and advised people not to contact him to be their lawyer.
