Legendary Director John Singleton, Dies at 51

Legendary film director, John Singleton, has passed away at the age of 51, succumbing to complications of a stroke.

At the time of his death, Singleton had been hospitalized at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles for 12 days and had suffered a stroke and coma while in the ICU. News surfaced that his family made requests to take him off of life support on Monday, as he had become unresponsive to treatment.

Singleton’s family announced their decision in an official statement.

“It is with heavy hearts we announce that our beloved son, father and friend, John Daniel Singleton will be taken off life support today. This was an agonizing decision one that our family made, over a number of days, with the careful counsel of John’s doctors.”

Singleton, who is best known for films such as “Boyz n the Hood,” “Higher Learning,” Poetic Justice” and “Baby Boy,” often used his childhood in South Central Los Angeles as inspiration for his coming to age films and has been credited with launching the acting careers of some of the biggest names in entertainment, such as Taraji P. Henson, Ice Cube and Tyrese.

At the age of 24, Singleton broke barriers in the entertainment industry with his debut film, “Boyz n the Hood.” The film earned him an Academy Award nomination for Best Director, making him both the youngest and first African American to receive the nomination in 1991.
