Back in 2017, Nevada legalized marijuana for recreational use, eliminating the negative stigma attached to the natural drug. But now, just two years later, state officials are looking to take the legalization one step further, in an attempt to protect the working-class stoner.
As part of a new law, signed by Gov. Steve Sisolak, Nevada employers will no longer be able to refuse applicants over a failed drug screen, if the substance is marijuana.
“It is unlawful for any employer in this State to fail or refuse to hire a prospective employee because the prospective employee submitted to a screening test and the results of the screening test indicate the presence of marijuana,” the law read.
The Silver State will become the first to pass such a law, however, it does come with a few exceptions. According to local news, the new law will not apply to firefighters, paramedics, employees who operate a vehicle or those, “in the determination of the employer, could adversely affect others’ safety.”
The law is expected to go into effect in 2020.
