Kim Kardashian is back it again and is making headlines for her continuous efforts in prison reform. Most recently, she has advocated for a prison inmate who was convicted of murder 23 years ago.
Momolu Stewart, 39, was convicted of murder back in 1999 for the shooting the death of 23-year-old Mark Rosebure, when he was 16-years-old.
With the help of #KimK, his life sentence was reduced Friday from life, to time served plus three days, with five years of probation. Video footage showed the emotional moment of Stewart leaving the DC Central Detention Facility, a free man, three days later, as he was greeted by family and friends.
Stewart told ‘Oxygen,’ “I was buried alive,” he added, “So now, I’ve been resurrected. I’m back, and I’m better.”
Stewart’s release comes as the result of a petition under the Incarceration Reduction Amendment Act, a Washington DC law, which allows inmates who were tried as adults while still minors, to ask to have their sentences reduced.
The beauty mogul who is studying to become a lawyer, met one-on-one with Stewart a few months back while shooting her upcoming documentary, ‘Kim Kardashian West: The Justice Project.’ After the meeting, she wrote a letter in his support to DC Superior Court Judge Robert Salerno. Two months after the letter was written, came Stewart’s release.
The letter stated, “While he cannot go back and change what happened when he was 16 years old, he takes responsibility for the pain he has caused to the victim’s family, and feels true remorse for his role in the crime that resulted in the loss of life.”
Kardashian added that his mother killed his college professor father when he was 6 years old, and without a dad, Stewart “turned to the streets for guidance.”
However, during his more than two decades in prison, Stewart reportedly got his GED, and received college credits through coursework in Georgetown Prison Scholars program. He has also been credited to helping mentor others.
According to Oxygen.com, Judge Robert Salerno told Stewart Friday that, “You seem to have some talents and gifts, sir,” adding that Stewart should continue his education and work on helping to rehabilitate others.
