Virginia Doctor Arrested For Performing Unapproved Surgeries On Women; Allegedly Tied Woman’s Tubes Without Consent

A Virginia doctor was arrested for allegedly performing unnecessary operations on women, including tying the fallopian tubes of a woman without her consent or knowledge of such actions.

According to Fox News, Javaid Perwaiz of Chesapeake was arrested and charged Friday with one count of health care fraud and another for making false statements relating to health care matters. He is currently being held without bond until his detention hearing on Thursday.

The FBI began investigating Perawaiz September 2018 after receiving a tip from a hospital employee who began to question Perwaiz’s actions. According to the affidavit written by the FBI, Perwaiz’s alleged medical procedures had been carried out repeatedly.

The employee claimed his patients were returning for their “annual cleanouts,” but many weren’t sure what procedures they were actually signing up for. The employee also stated Perwaiz did so many surgeries, it was hard for hospital staff to keep up.

According to the affidavit, which focuses on four unidentified women, each underwent “hysterectomies, cystectomies, myomectomies, tubal ligation, and dilation & curettage.” Reports also claim he repeatedly misled Medicaid patients to procedures, using a cancer diagnosis “to scare patients into having surgery.”

Perwaiz reportedly earned his license in 1980, however, in 1982, he lost his admitting privileges at Bon Secours Maryview Medical Center “due to poor clinical judgment and for performing unnecessary surgeries.”

During his career, he faced at least eight malpractice lawsuits, all from allegations of falsifying patient records and failure to use less invasive techniques.

Perwaiz, who has practiced “for over 30 years,” has two offices in Chesapeake, according to his website. He was also affiliated with Bon Secours Maryview Medical Center and Chesapeake Regional Medical Center. However, the webpage for Perwaiz on Bon Secours’ website has been taken down as of Monday morning.
