The longest-running NBC show may be over for good as the entire cast of “Days of Our Lives” gets released from their contracts.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, the 55-year-old drama will go on an indefinite hiatus at the end of November after finishing out the current season.
The Hollywood Reporter reached out to NBC and Sony Pictures TV for comment, which both declined.
Corday Productions, producers, and contract holders with the cast made the call to release the actors. Should “Days of Our Lives” be picked up again, production would likely resume in the spring, and the cast would have to negotiate new contracts. Apparently, Sony Pictures TV and NBC were discussing another season when the production company released the cast.
Reports say Corday sued Sony earlier this year on claims that the studio hadn’t given its all regarding the distribution of the drama series. Claims stated Sony decided to “eliminate any competition to its wholly-owned series The Young and the Restless. … In the annals of Hollywood television, it is difficult to identify a distributor more guilty of blatant conflict of interest, deceit, perfidy, and abuse of market power.”
Sony, however, dismissed several of Corday’s claims in August, but Corday’s allegation that Sony failed to market the show and share marketing cost was permitted to move forward.
”Days of Our Lives” averaged about two million daily viewers this season, which is reportedly the smallest audience in comparison to the other four daytime drama television shows on NBC.
