A San Diego State University freshman died after he attended a fraternity event last week, resulting in the suspension of all interfraternity council-affiliated organizations.
The indefinite suspension notice prevents all organizations from hosting events following the incident. Reports say of the 14 organizations on campus, six had already been suspended, and four were currently under investigation prior to the death last week.
According to USA Today, Dylan Hernandez was taken to the hospital on Thursday morning by emergency responders after the event held the night before. His family “gave their goodbyes late Sunday night,” SDSU President Adela de la Torre said in a statement Monday.
The suspension notice did not mention the cause of death.
“Each of us, including our students, must uphold the highest standards that do not put the health and safety of anyone at risk,” de la Torre said. “As a mother, nothing can replace the profound loss of a child, and the devastating heartbreak the family and their loved ones are experiencing. All of us in the Aztec family are sending our prayers and are here to support the family.”
Sources say the university police are investigating what exactly occurred, resulting in Hernandez needing medical attention. Police received a 911 call requesting help for the 19-year-old while he was in a residence hall.
“Dylan was an outgoing, light-hearted and goofy person who had so much love to give to everyone he met,” a GoFundMe page described the student from Jacksonville, Florida. “He never failed to make everyone in the room smile, and his laugh was infectious.”
