A family in Alaska has been left devastated in the wake of a deadly Thanksgiving shooting that left a 23-year old woman dead and her older brother charged with her murder.
The Anchorage Police Department arrested 27-year-old Moses Tony Crowe last week after he allegedly shot his younger sister, Amanda Rose Owen, on Thanksgiving Day. Officials say the shooting stemmed from her decision to unfriend Crowe on Facebook.
The tragedy unfolded once authorities received two 911 calls, the first from Owen’s uncle and the second from Crowe’s grandmother. Owen’s uncle said that he “heard a pop” while cooking the family’s holiday meal and later discovered what he believed to be his niece suffering from a bullet wound as the result of an accidental shooting. At the time, he reported that she was “unconscious but breathing.”
However, Crowe’s grandmother, witnessed the shooting and detailed the incident to authorities, refuting the claim that the shooting was accidental. She claimed that as she was sitting on her bed speaking to Owen, who was seated adjacently holding her 1-year-old son, Crowe entered the bedroom, visibly upset over Owen’s alleged decision to unfriend or block him on Facebook.
According to the grandmother, Crowe then pulled a weapon from his coat, presumably a gun, although the grandmother could not be sure what the object was at first glance. He then aimed the pistol at Owen’s head and shot her while she was still holding the child. Authorities responded to the scene at the Anchorage home at approximately 3:14 p.m., where officers found Owens with a gunshot wound to her upper body.
Despite the grandmother’s account, Crowe continued to claim that the shooting was accidental, resulting from “twirling the pistol around on his finger when it went off.” Crowe has been charged with second-degree murder, and a bond was set at $500,000 cash.
