Kid Rock is seemingly cutting ties with the city of Detroit following the closure announcement of a Detroit restaurant, and now, he’s blaming Al Sharpton.
Rock is a native of Michigan, hailing specifically from the city of Romeo. On Wednesday morning, Rock posted to Facebook, stating that he will not be renewing his licensing deal for his Made in Detroit restaurant at Little Caesars Arena amid the restaurant’s announcement by Ilitch Holdings. The restaurant has operated there since the arena opened in 2017, according to Detroit Free Press.
“I will not be renewing my licensing agreement for my Made In Detroit Restaurant this April. I appreciate all who have patronized our place and still have much love for the City of Detroit and the people/organizations that I have helped there for years, black, white, whatever, but learned long ago, go where you’re celebrated, not tolerated. I guess the millions of dollars I pumped into that town was not enough. I will let the NAN network and others go ahead and take the wheel now. Good luck. I may be guilty of being a loud-mouth jerk at times, but trying to label me racist is a joke, and actually only does a disservice to the black community, which I have supported my entire life, by trying to alienate myself and many others.” He then took a shot at Civil Rights Activist, Al Sharpton. “PS – Hey Al Sharpton, you or your cronies will never beat me, you tax-evading, race-baiting clown! Trump 2020!!,” Rock wrote.
Protesters with Michigan National Action Network (NAN) planned a media event outside the venue, days after a video emerged of Rock blasting several TV hosts, including #OprahWinfrey. In his Wednesday statement, Rock cited his record of donations to Detroit causes through the years. “I guess the millions of dollars I pumped into that town was not enough,” he wrote. “I will let the NAN network and others go ahead and take the wheel now. Good luck.”
TMZ caught up with Sharpton, who responded to Rock’s attack, explaining that the artist’s beef with him stems from Sharpton’s organization protesting Kid Rock’s use of the Confederate flag back in 2015 and them pushing for General Motors to cut their partnership with him. “If he’s leaving Detroit because of our protest, we consider that a success,” said Sharpton.
