Jordan Peele’s horror blockbuster ‘Us’ has been named the best film of 2019 by the African American Film Critics Association (AAFCA).

AAFCA, the world’s largest group of black film critics, also named Peele the best director and Lupita Nyong’o,  the best actress for her leading role in the film. “Us” earned over $255 million globally.

President and Co-Founder Gil Robertson spoke to Peele utilizing African American characters in horror films in a way that has not been done before.

“With ‘Us,’ he once again upended the horror genre. His centering of a black nuclear family determined to survive in a complex storyline in a genre where black family units have historically been unseen is extraordinary. He continues to push previously set boundaries with bold storylines that bring a refreshing perspective to cinema overall and the genre specifically,” he said.

Just two years ago, Peele was honored for his prior suspense hit ‘Get Out,’ which landed four awards, including best film, best director, best screenplay, and best actor for Daniel Kaluuya.

Other AAFCA accolades included Eddie Murphy for best actor for his role in “Dolemite Is My Name” and Jamie Foxx for best-supporting actor for his role in the critically acclaimed drama, “Just Mercy.” Melina Matsoukas also scored the AAFCA’s Impact Award for her debut feature in the romantic drama, “Queen & Slim.”

The AAFCA Awards will take place Wednesday, January 22nd, 2020 at the Taglyan Complex in Los Angeles, California.
