Hip hop artist Mase is calling out Diddy over his criticism of the Grammys and says Diddy tricked him out of buying back his publishing for $2 million.
#BadBoys for life isn’t quite the same tune Mase and Diddy are playing anymore. On Friday, Mase took to Instagram to get things off his chest about his former manager. It all started when Diddy performed a speech at Clive Davis’ recent pre-Grammy gala; while there, the mogul called out the Recording Academy for continuously slighting Black musicians in major categories. “Every year, y’all be killing us man. The amount of time it takes to make these records, to pour your heart into it, and you just want an even playing field,” said Diddy.
This triggered Mase, who, in a lengthy post, pointed out that Diddy has also taken advantage of Black artists. “Your past business practices knowingly has continued purposely starved your artist and been extremely unfair to the very same artist that helped u obtain that Icon Award on the iconic Badboy label,” said Mase with a tweet from Meek Mill regarding “slave contracts.” Mase claimed that Diddy gave him $20,000 for his publishing 24 years ago. He said Diddy’s actions made him “never want to work” with him again.
However, the 42-year-old said that he tried a second time to buy back his publishing rights, but Diddy said he would only give them to him if he could match what “what the EUROPEAN GUY OFFER him.” “You bought it for about $20k & I offered you $2m in cash,” he wrote. “This is not black excellence at all. When our race is enslaving us. If it’s about us owning, it can’t be about us owning each other.” Mase said his only option is to wait until the rights revert back to him.
Mase said that Diddy is everything that he preaches against, “No more hiding behind ‘love,'” he continued. “U CHANGED? GIVE THE ARTIST BACK THEIR $$$. So they can take care of their families.”
