As the coronavirus continues to run rampant in the United States, infecting nearly 60,000 people, law officials are cracking down on those looking to weaponize the deadly virus.
A 21-year-old man is facing charges for coughing in Chicago police officers’ faces after claiming to be diagnosed with coronavirus.
The incident occurred on Sunday after officials responded to a call about a crash. According to police, the 21-year-old, identified as Anthony Ponzi, was driving his Jeep on the wrong side of the road when he crashed into another car. He then got out of his car and attacked the other driver, reports state.
Upon arrival, police noticed Ponzi’s aggression, as well as his slurred speech, but when officers tried to speak with him, Ponzi coughed in their faces and claimed he had COVID-19.
Ponzi was then arrested and taken to a hospital for treatment, but while there, he informed staff that he didn’t really have the virus.
According to NBC News, Ponzi has been charged with two felony counts of aggravated battery to a peace officer for the cough. He’s also been slapped with several misdemeanor charges, including battery, DUI, and resisting arrest. He is scheduled to appear in court on Monday.
