A retired St. Louis police captain was killed by looters while responding to alarms at a friend’s pawn shop.
David Dorn, 77, was found on the sidewalk outside of Lee’s Pawn & Jewelry at about 2:30 a.m. on Tuesday, according to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
The pawnshop was owned by a friend of Dorn, according to his wife, and he often would respond to alarms at the shop. His wife, Ann Marie Dorn, is a sergeant with the St. Louis Police Department.
The shooting and burglary were streamed on Facebook Live, but the video was later taken down. The video was viewed more than 94,000 times.
The shooting happened on a particularly violent night for St Louis, with four officers injured, 55 businesses damaged, and a looter gravely injured in a shootout with police following protests over the death of George Floyd.
Police Chief John Hayden said at a news conference that “David Dorn was a fine captain. Many of us younger officers looked up to him.”
Dorn served on the police force for 38 years. After his retirement, he became the police chief in Moline Acres.
No arrests have been made. Crimestoppers has offered a reward of up to $10,000 for information leading to an arrest.
