A Florida man is not expected to be charged with murder after shooting and killing a man who broke into his home with a gun. According to a Florida sheriff, he was “utilizing his Second Amendment right to protect himself and his family.”
The homeowner reportedly acted in self-defense when he killed Ronald Fleet, 55, in Land O’Lakes Saturday afternoon, Pasco County Sheriff Chris Nocco said.
According to reports, Fleet was shot at a Florida home, which belongs to a family member of his estranged wife, who was reportedly divorcing him.
He had a prior arrest for domestic battery in 2011, according to WFLA-TV.
When he approached the homeowner’s home, Fleet was angry and armed with a .380 handgun because they supported his wife during the litigation.
He then kicked in the door before backing away and firing his gun at the homeowner, who also was firing back.
According to the sheriff, when Fleet approached the home for a second time, he was shot and killed by the homeowner.
But before being shot to death, he discharged one round.
“Any loss of life is tragic, but the victim was utilizing his Second Amendment right to protect himself and his family from the fear of Ronald, who was carrying a gun and kicking in the door,” Nocco said, according to Fox 13 Tampa. “I can’t imagine the fear they were going through.”
