There has been a spike in coronavirus cases in children across the U.S.

At least 61,000 children tested positive for COVID-19 in the last week of October, according to data Monday by the American Academy of Pediatrics and the Children’s Hospital Association.

The AAP said in a statement that the cases rose in children at “unprecedented levels” and last week’s numbers are “larger than any previous week in the pandemic.”

Overall there were about 200,000 new cases in children during October and since the pandemic began, 853,000 children have tested positive.

“This is a stark reminder of the impact this pandemic is having on everyone – including our children and adolescents,” AAP President Dr. Sally Goza said in a statement. “This virus is highly contagious, and as we see spikes in many communities, children are more likely to be infected, too.”

The AAP added that the number is likely much higher than what’s being reported because most children show mild symptoms that look like a cold and don’t get tested.
