New Orleans bounce artist Big Freedia appeared on Wednesday’s episode of the Just The Sip podcast with E! ‘s Justin Sylvester, where she gushed about collaborating with Beyoncé.
You might know her from Drake’s “Nice For What,” but it was her collaboration on Beyoncé’s “Formation” that was most memorable for her.
It turns out it was Queen Bey’s idea to feature the Queen of Bounce on the record, something Freedia felt was “unbelievable.”
“My publicist called and said that Beyoncé wanted your number. I was like, ‘Well girl, why are you still on the phone?'” she questioned.
“Sitting at home waiting for the phone call was a little nerve-wracking ’cause I was like, ‘Is she gonna call now? Is she gonna call later?'” she continued. “So I’m just glued to the phone, and when she finally called, she said, ‘Hi, you know who this is?'”
“I died at home and then came back to life,” she added. “But I was really excited about the phone call. She said she wanted me to talk some New Orleans shit on her track, and that’s exactly what I did. They sent me a very small snippet of the track, and me and my DJ went to the studio.”
She sent the track back to Beyoncé, who reacted by telling her, “Oh my god, this is perfect, I love it.” And the rest is history.
Most recently, Big Freedia released a documentary on NBC’s streaming service, Peacock. Titled Freedia’s Got A Gun, the bounce legend said it was one of the most challenging film work she’s ever done, but it “was much needed.”
