An Ohio police officer died after trying to save teens who fell through ice.
Around 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday, police received a call about a drowning near a private dock on Rocky Fork Lake’s north side, WCPO reports. A 13-year-old boy was trying to find the girl under the ice before he got free. The New York Post reports divers were able to pull the girl, 16, from the lake at around 11 p.m. Unfortunately, the girl, who’d been under the ice for hours, died from her injuries after being taken to the hospital.
The outlet reports that Ohio Natural Resources Department police officer Jason Lagore responded to the incident and died after reportedly suffering a medical emergency during his attempt to arrest the teens. Not long after arriving at the scene, Lagore became ill and was taken to the hospital, but he could not be resuscitated. No other details about his death have been released.
“Our hearts are with the family and loved ones of Officer Jason Lagore, who died in the line of duty last night,” Ohio Department of Natural Resources Director Mary Mertz said. “Our law enforcement officers and their families carry a unique and challenging burden of responsibilities, and we are deeply grateful for their service.”
The boy was taken to the hospital, where he was treated for hypothermia.
