“Soul” won the best-animated motion picture award, making its co-director Kemp Powers the first Black debut filmmaker to win a Golden Globe. The movie was the first Pixar film with a Black lead character.
“Being able to tell a universal tale that explored the meaning of life through the prism of a Black man’s experiences was a special honor,” co-director Kemp Powers said in an acceptance speech during the 78th annual Golden Globes.
“And though the details are specific, I really do believe our story is universal,” he continued. “So many friends and strangers from all walks of life wrote to tell us how this film resonated with them and how grateful they were to be reminded the seemingly simple everyday moments of life are often the most important.”
Daniel Kaluuya became the fifth black performer to win a Golden Globe for his supporting actor role as Black Panther chairman Fred Hampton in Shaka King’s historical drama “Judas and the Black Messiah.”
Kaluuya was able to give his acceptance speech despite the technical difficulties that persisted through the night.
“I gave everything,” Kaluuya said of his role. “And I couldn’t give it to a more noble man, than chairman Fred Hampton. I hope generations after this can see how brilliantly he thought, how brilliantly he spoke and how brilliantly he loved.”
