Two Amazon Workers Stole More Than $140,000 Worth Of Goods; Got Caught After Police Responded To Their Home After Argument

Two Amazon workers stole $140,000 worth of goods from one of the company’s depots in the United Kingdom.

Lucian Leonte, 37, and Maria Stricescu, 51, were employees at a distribution center in the village of Kegworth in the East Midlands region. Since July 2019, the couple was “discreetly” stealing items from the center and jacking the system to make it seem like the items were delivered to customers, police said

Leonte and Stricescu would work together, as the two were stationed with different roles within the company. Leonte was a packer at the Kegworth facility, and he would take the items, sell them, and transferred the money earned to accounts in Romania.

Things were going well for the two until they got into a heated argument, and that’s when their operation went downhill. Back in January, the police caught the couple after they responded to an unrelated incident. The two had been arguing, and when police came to the scene, Leonte admitted to their dirty deeds. When police searched their Derby home, they found a slew of stolen items, including laptops, iPads, cell phones, and more. It all totaled out to nearly $70,000. But, police said the couple had more items that came out to more than $100,000.

Detective Constable Gavin Chantrill said: “Both defendants over a period of time abused their position at Amazon for their own financial gain.

“Neither took responsibility for their actions during the investigation and blamed each other for their actions. We are pleased they have now pleaded guilty to their part in the offenses.”

Last Friday, the two were sentenced to two years and seven months in prison at Leicester Crown Court.
