A 22-year-old Texas man who believed incorrect social media rumors about the identity of his brother’s killer has killed an innocent man.
Norman Christopher Collier IV has been charged with capital murder. He is being held on a $1 million bond at the Dallas County Jail, according to KWTX.
The incident occurred just three days after Collier’s 19-year-old brother, Camran Kashawn Collier, was shot and killed in his car. On April 25, during a balloon release ceremony honoring the slain Collier, Norman fatally shot 20-year-old Kolby Marquise Graham.
According to authorities, Norman “mistakenly believed the internet rumors about his brother’s killer” and killed an innocent man.
“This is the first time in my career that I have seen social media cause the death of somebody who was innocent,” said Cpl. Pete Schulte, a spokesman for the police department. “I just hope people will just think about that when they start spreading rumors and false information on social media, that it can have an effect.”
The suspect in Camran’s case has been arrested and is also facing a capital murder charge, according to NBC5. According to Schulte, the suspect has not been identified by name. He told the outlet the case is moving along through the justice system. Investigators believe the motive for the shooting was a robbery.
