Darriynn Ronnell Brown has officially been charged with capital murder in the death of four-year-old Cash Gernon following the emergence of new evidence.
This upgraded charge arrived four weeks after the boy was taken from his bed in a bold kidnapping captured on camera. In the footage, Brown is seen standing over the boy and his twin brother’s crib at about 5 a.m. The man is then seen on video returning nearly two and a half hours later, lifting the blanket covering Cash’s twin, before exiting without him. Cash was found stabbed to death on a Dallas street on May 15th.
The twin boys stayed with their father’s ex-girlfriend, Monica Sherrod, who reported Cash missing almost five hours after being kidnapped from her home.
Brown had already been facing kidnapping and theft charges related to Cash’s disappearance. In a shocking twist, Brown allegedly tried to kidnap a two-year-old girl back in February but stopped.
While police have not detailed what that new evidence was that tied Brown to the killing, the Dallas Police Department confirmed that the discovery links the teenager to the toddler at the time of his death.
The 18-year-old maintains that he is not seen in the video removing the young child from his bed. His attorney, Heath Harris, said that he is still waiting to access all of the evidence to prepare a defense for his client. He says that he is also concerned about the case being prejudiced.
“This is not an open and shut case. Even if you believe that’s Brown on the video, it doesn’t mean he killed the kid. The world is basically prejudicing this whole community by saying, “That’s him,” Harris stated. He added that he is also waiting on the doctor to determine if Brown is mentally competent to stand trial.
If Brown is found guilty, he faces a mandatory life sentence or possibly the death penalty.
