HBO announced that the critically acclaimed and well-received series “Lovecraft Country” will not be returning for Season 2.
“We will not be moving forward with a second season of Lovecraft Country,” HBO told Deadline in a statement. “We are grateful for the dedication and artistry of the gifted cast and crew, and to Misha Green, who crafted this groundbreaking series. And to the fans, thank you for joining us on this journey.”
Misha Green’s Lovecraft Country was a hit on the cable network, blending horror, sci-fi, and social commentary within the backdrop of a fictional period drama. The show used all of those elements along with real historical figures, to create the series that took pop culture by storm in August of 2020 and helped advance the social conversation around racism in the United States.
The series was executive produced by Green and produced by J.J. Abrams’ Bad Robot and Jordan Peele’s Monkeypaw Productions. The show became a standout thanks to a brilliant cast that featured Jurnee Smollett, Jonathan Majors, Courtney B. Vance and Michael K. Williams.
The 10 episode show became one of the most-watched new shows on HBO Max, after “word of mouth” grew audience numbers week by week. By the time the final episode was released in October, the premiere episode had crossed the 10M viewers mark.
