Princeton is going to offer a course on former Black Panther Party member Angela Davis.
The course is called #BlackLivesMatter, and it is slated to trace “the historical roots and growth of the Black Lives Matter social movement in the United States and comparative global contexts.” It will be taught by Critical Race Theory supporter assistant professor Hanna Garth. Garth’s website states she has a “commitment to feminist methodologies and critical race theory.”
The New York Post reports that the course “seeks to document the forms of dispossession that Black Americans face, and offers a critical examination of the prison industrial complex, police brutality, urban poverty, and white supremacy in the US.”
Some of the literature that students in the course will read includes Angela Davis’ “Freedom is a Constant Struggle.”
Angela Davis became one of the most well-known members of the Black Panther Party. Back in 1970, she was accused of providing weapons in a courtroom shooting, which led to the deaths of four people.
After 18 months in jail, Davis was eventually acquitted of all charges, including kidnapping, murder and criminal conspiracy. According to the school’s website, she teaches in the History of Consciousness and Feminist Studies Departments at the University of California, Santa Cruz.
