Walmart has issued a recall of an aromatherapy spray after a “rare and dangerous bacteria” was found.
An investigation has been launched into an aromatherapy product from a brand called Better Homes & Garden after two people reportedly died after using it. So far, the investigation has shown that the product could allegedly cause a fatal condition.
These findings came after the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention tested Walmart’s Better Homes and Gardens Essential Oil Infused Aromatherapy Room Spray with Gemstones. The test resulted in the organization finding Burkholderia pseudomallei bacteria, which can cause a person to get a fatal condition called melioidosis. One of the two people who have died in relation to the product was a child.
The Consumer Product Safety Commission says it is looking into four confirmed cases of the issue in Minnesota, Texas, Georgia, and Kansas.
People who purchased the aromatherapy spray are instructed to stop using the product immediately, wrap up the product twice using a Zip-top bag and send it in a box back to Walmart. Those who return the item will get a full refund along with a $20 gift card.
“I urge consumers to stop use of the recalled products and follow CDC’s guidance in returning them to Walmart stores,” CPSC Chair Alex Hoehn-Saric said in a statement. “The CPSC worked with Walmart to get a recall into place within days of learning from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) about the dangerous bacteria found in a bottle of the room spray and the possible connection to deaths and illness.”
