Jay-Z is off the hook in his long-running lawsuit involving a soured cologne deal.
On Wednesday, a Manhattan jury cleared Jay-Z of wrongdoing in a lawsuit against him that has spanned six years. Parlux Fragrances LLC sued Jay-Z and his S. Carter Enterprises, claiming that he failed to keep up his end of their cologne partnership. Parlux alleges that the Roc-A-Fella mogul launched “Gold Jay-Z” through them in 2013 but did not promote the fragrance, which was a breach of their contract. The company said that HOV refused to show up for a promotional appearance at Good Morning America and did not approve certain aspects needed to keep the brand alive.
The 51-year-old fired back at Parlux, stating that he fulfilled his contractual obligations. He also claimed that it was the fragrance company that posed a threat to his image. He maintains that he was still owed royalties from the deal and countersued for $6 million.
However, after a three-week jury trial that began on October 18th, neither side was awarded any money. Justice Andrew Borrok said that both parties failed to prove their case before excusing them from the courtroom.
Following the verdict, the “Blueprint” rapper released a statement thanking the jury for showing up “during these difficult times.”
Parlux, who was seeking $67 million in damages, is likely to appeal the verdict.
