Girlfriend of Daunte Wright Details Trying To Help Him After He Was Shot By Minnesota Officer

The girlfriend of Daunte Wright took the stand on Thursday to detail his final moments after being shot by former Brooklyn Center police Officer Kim Potter.

Alayna Albrecht-Payton, who was in the car with Wright at the time of the murder, recounted the chaos that ensued after the shooting, telling the court that she tried frantically to stop the bleeding by retrieving “whatever was in the car” and pressing it against the bullet wound in his chest.

Potter shot the unarmed young Black man during an April 11th traffic stop. She maintains that she meant to pull her taser on Wright while he was attempting to drive away but accidentally grabbed her gun instead. She resigned two days after the shooting following widespread outrage.

During the ordeal, Albrecht-Payton admits that she answered a FaceTime call from Wright’s mother, Katie Bryant, and inadvertently showed her the 20-year-old as he was struggling to breathe.

“I pointed the camera on him, and I’m so sorry I did that,” she said during her emotional testimony.

Officer Anthony Luckey, who Potter was training on that fateful evening, testified that he smelled marijuana coming from the car and saw marijuana in the middle console. He also claimed that Wright didn’t have a driver’s license and presented an expired proof of insurance. Once they realized Wright had a warrant out for his arrest, Luckey was preparing to arrest him. Before the trainee could place the handcuffs on Wright, he heard Potter fire her gun. The shot caused him to jump back as the car began to roll away. However, Albrecht-Payton says the vehicle was only moving because Wright’s foot was no longer on the brake.

Potter is facing first and second-degree manslaughter. If convicted, she faces over ten years in prison.
