The Boston Marathon bomber has been ordered to hand over his $1,400 Coronavirus relief payment to his victims for restitution.
Run that stimmy check, Dzhokhar Tsarnaev. According to a court filing on Wednesday, prosecutors have ordered Tsarnaev to fork over his stimulus check and give it to the families of the victims he killed or harmed, Yahoo! Life reports.
Tsarnaev reportedly has $3,885.06 in his inmate trust account with money from the government, including the Office of Federal Defenders of New York and from private citizens. According to the news outlet, Tsarnaev hasn’t paid any money toward the $101 million he owes the Boston Marathon victims. Instead, he’s been spending it on “gifts,” “support,” and “books.” He also has to pay a $3,000 special assessment as part of his sentencing, Yahoo! Life reports.
Tsarnaev was set to be given the death penalty following the 2013 Boston Marathon bombing. However, his death sentence was overturned in 2020 due to a trial judge allegedly excluding some evidence. But death may still be his fate, as an appeal to reinstate his death sentence is being decided on by the U.S. Supreme Court.
“By Congressional mandate, the United States has a statutory duty to collect restitution owed to crime victims,” prosecutors said in the court filing. “The United States submits that the requested relief is reasonable and appropriate in this instance, especially in light of the Defendant prioritizing payments to his siblings over the victims of his crimes,” the filing said.
My question is, how was he ever given a stimulus check in the first place? Tsarnaev’s terror led to the deaths of three people, and 265 people were injured or lost limbs.
